What is a device driver ?

According Wikipedia, a device driver, or just driver, is a software that allow higher-level computer programs to interact with a device (mouse, keyboard, monitor, digital camera, pendrive,...)

Device drivers are operative system depended (Linux, XP, Vista) and its writting requires an in-depth understanding of how the hardware and the software of a given platform function.
